Two arrested in Boksburg for electricity meter tampering

The City of Ekurhuleni’s energy department detected that meter boxes were tampered with at a residential house in Leeuwpoort Street as well as at a business establishment in Main Street in Boksburg.

According to chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, an electrical engineer from the metro then on Tuesday, November 6 sought the assistance of the EMPD Security and Standards and Anti-Cable Theft Unit members.

“The caretaker at the residential house spilled the beans and admitted to having paid an employee of a company that is contracted to the City of Ekurhuleni R1 200 in August.

“The employee was paid to install meters in order to bypass meter boxes so that the reading of the consumption is not recorded,” said Kgasago.

He said the contractor was called on his cellphone under the pretext that his balance of R600 was ready for collection.

“He was arrested when he arrived at the house.

“The second stop was in Main Street at a supermarket owned by a Tanzanian national who confessed that he did tamper with the device. He was also arrested.

“Both the arrested suspects were detained at Boksburg police station on charges of tampering with essential (energy) infrastructure. They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.”
