Mayor announces extension of Harambee Rapid Bus Transport System

Harambee, which means ”pulling or working together in unity” in Swahili, will launch operationally in 2016.

 

The mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, on October 31, announced the extension of services to the Harambee Rapid Bus Transport System.

The Harambee service is celebrating it’s first year of operations.

According to Themba Gadebe, the extension of the services is a practical example of how the City of Ekurhuleni is contributing to the transformation and modernization of the public transport system within the City.

The extension of services include the following:

  1. Ten new Harambee buses will be added to the current operational fleet during November. An additional 22 new Harambee buses will be added to the operational fleet from mid-January 2019. All buses will be universally accessible and will cater to passengers with special needs.
  1. During the month of November the current service will be extended by the addition of complimentary route that will operate from the terminus at Tembisa Hospital with curbside stops all the way to Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport (ORTIA). The route will consist of 28km in one direction and 56km round trip.
  1. A cashless Harambee Europay Mastercard and Visa (EMV) card will be introduced as a reloadable bus ticket. The metro said it will be piloting the service during the month November 2018, thereafter commuters will be given a period to migrate from the current fare collection system.
  1. Seven new Harambee ticket sales points will be available.

Gadebe said the City remains committed to strengthening a healthy working relationship with the Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry (ETI) and KTVR Taxi Associations.
