Community leader, bodyguard shot dead in Angelo

The leader of the informal settlement, popularly known as Kwa-Gumede, was reportedly shot seven times in the back of his body and head. The bodyguard took four bullets in his back.

One of the Driefontein informal settlement community leaders, Goodman Biyela, and his apparent bodyguard, identified as Fihlela Xulu, were killed in Angelo informal settlement.

According to the Boksburg police, Biyela was on October 19, reportedly with his bodyguard, on his way to work in Lilianton, Witfield when they were killed.

“He and his bodyguard were walking along the informal settlement, near the Angelo Railway Station, when they were killed in an ambush, believed to be politically motivated,” said Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Const Ntsako Ledwaba.

Both Biyela and Xulu were certified death on the scene.

Underneath Xulu’s body, police said they found a silver firearm, a 9mm with its serial number filed off, 17 cartridges and two projectiles.

Police are investigating the double murder case and the killers are still at large.

It’s barely a year after the neighbouring Angelo informal settlement lost its popular community leader Thomas Sibuyi in an execution-style killing.

Sibuyi was shot multiple times at close range near the traffic light at the intersection of Field and Main Reef roads, just before 8pm on March 5.

The then spokesperson, Captain Cebisa Maseko, said police launched an intensive investigation into the Sibuyi case, but no arrest has been made and the motive for his killing still remains unclear.

The police need anyone with information regarding both cases to contact the detective branch on 011 841 6860/6859.
