Woman shot in terrifying home invasion

Community members have decided to take matters into their own hands by patrolling the streets during the night.

A Reiger Park family narrowly escaped death when recently attacked by would-be-robbers who forced their way into the family’s home in the MM (Ma se Moer) section of the township.

According to one of the family members, he and his wife, son and two visitors were inside their house when the intruders arrived and attempted to steal the TV set at about 9.15pm.

In attempts to save their belongings, the family fought back and a struggle ensued. The struggle during the home invasion resulted in the wife being shot in the stomach.

“The robbers opened fire and a bullet hit my wife in the stomach. They fled the scene empty-handed,” said the husband. The wife was rushed to hospital where she was admitted.

The family feel the police are not doing enough to curb the crime situation in the township they said is plagued with serious and violent crimes.

“We are on our own here because authorities, including politicians, have failed us. They can’t even stop the illegal mining taking place in broad daylight next to our homes.

“We are the ones left vulnerable, so we have no choice but to deal with the problem ourselves because the people who should protect us have failed to do so – and they don’t even support our neighbourhood patrols,” said the family member.

The Reiger Park police were not immediately available for comment on the home invasion and the alleged poor service.
