Truck tractor used in R1.6-million wire fence theft recovered in Boksburg

In-depth investigations are underway to recover the missing cargo.

Rolls of wire fence worth R1.6m were stolen from Edenvale, with the truck tractor then recovered in Boksburg with the cargo missing.

According to Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, on the night of Wednesday, September 26, a truck with two trailers pretending to be authentic transporters of the fence cargo to Zambia took delivery of the cargo from a company in Edenvale.

“It was subsequently found that the delivery was taken under false pretenses,” said Kgasago.

“Investigations were initiated which on Tuesday, October 9 resulted in the recovery of the truck and the trailers used in the theft. The recoveries were made at a truck stop on Wigg Road at Mapleton in Boksburg.”

He said the vehicles were found abandoned and rolls of wire fence were missing.

“The recovery was due to the swift response by an EMPD officer based in Brakpan who acted on a tip-off that led him to Mapleton where the vehicles were recovered around 3pm.

“The tracking records showed that the cargo was stored for four hours around Pomona in Kempton Park area on the night of theft.”

Kgasago said the cargo was stolen from a fencing company at Sebenza in the industrial area of Edenvale.

“The thieves used fake invoices to pick up the cargo. The recovered truck tractor and its trailers were found to be displaying fake discs which don’t correspond with the registration number plates.

“The ignition on the truck tractor showed evidence of being tempered with.

“Based on the several discrepancies as per the documentation, clearance certificates, tags and number plates, the recovered vehicles were taken to SAPS pound at Van Ryn Deep in Benoni for further investigations.”
