Dogs die from suspected poisoning in Farrar Park

The police believe that dogs are generally poisoned by criminals intending to break into properties.

A Farrar Park resident is left heartbroken after recently losing his two beloved dogs to suspected poisoning.

Pierre Bezuidenhout said he is convinced that his dogs were deliberately poisoned by thieves, who apparently wanted access to the residential complex on Beit Avenue.

The devastated Bezuidenhout said his dogs became listless, lying in an unnatural position with foam bubbling from their mouths.

“Their condition rapidly deteriorated. I then called the SPCA and a veterinarian for help, but it was too late as both my dogs died before they could get any help,” said Bezuidenhout.

Bezuidenhout, along with other residents, later discovered that poison-laced dog food was thrown into the garden for the innocent dogs to eat.

Some of the remaining poisoned dog food was found in the yard.

On Wednesday, a few days after the apparent poisoning, thieves broke into one of the houses in the complex and stole valuable goods including a TV set.

“It is the first time we encounter such horrible incidents in my home of three years,” said Bezuidenhout.

The Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Const Nstako Ledwaba, confirmed that two dogs were reportedly poisoned at the complex.

The SAPS also confirmed that a few days later, thieves forced their way into one of the houses in the complex and stole valuable goods including a TV set, refrigerator, microwave, documents, laptop, clothing and other items.

“We have registered a case and the matter is being investigated.”

Ledwaba warned residents to look out for suspicious people in their communities.

According to Ledwaba, there have been several other similar cases in the past few months and the latest incident occurred in Sunward Park where dogs fell victims to the deadly rat poison known as Halephirimi.

The incident was also linked to house break-ins as thieves later broke into the property in question and stole car parts.

“In most cases the perpetrators use any type of meat laced with the deadly Halephirimi, rat poison, which is readily available on the streets, to kill dogs.

“So people must be on the lookout for suspicious strangers, especially those lurking around properties. Residents need to also keep a close eye on their pets,” she said.
