Local star cyclist in critical condition after road accident

The Advertiser will give an update as her recovery progresses.

South African cycling champion Lynette Burger from Boksburg is in a critical but stable condition after being hit by a taxi while doing her usual training run in the early hours of September 26.

Burger’s husband, David Pieterse, confirmed the 2009 South African national road champion was knocked off her bicycle by a taxi which failed to stop at a red traffic light at the corner of Kingfisher Avenue and Rondebult Road.

According to Pieterse, his wife suffered punctures in both her lungs, slight bleeding on the brain, a broken collarbone and all her left side ribs are broken.

When the Advertiser spoke to Pieterse on September 28, he explained: “I spoke to the neurologist and he confirmed that her brain is perfectly fine,” said Pieterse.

“She’ll probably be fully sedated for the next two days to help relieve the pain, the doctors will also decide within the next two days whether she’ll need surgery to repair her broken ribs and collarbone.”

Burger (37) is also the 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour champion. She recently won the Race for Victory in Johannesburg as well as the Buffelspoort Road Challenge.

She began cycling in 2002 as a fun rider before signing for her first team in 2004. She’s made two returns to the sport after retiring in as many times.
