Four correctional services officials arrested following fugitive’s arrest

The offender had already served nine of his 18 years sentence for robbery.

Four correctional services officials have been arrested and also charged with aiding the escape of an inmate from Boksburg Prison.

The offender, Mxolisi Booi, escaped from Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on September 25, while he was attending a medical check-up.

Mocheta Monama, Gauteng regional correctional services spokesperson, said: “The offender was rearrested on September 26 after a chase by the SAPS, EMPD and the Correctional Services Emergency Support Team on the N12 near Daveyton.

“He was found with his girlfriend, who was also arrested and charged with aiding an escape. The four officials have been arrested and also charged with aiding an escape. Investigations are continuing.”

Monama highlighted that so far a total of three escapes involving 18 inmates have taken place in the Gauteng region during this financial year.

“This number includes the mass escape from Johannesburg Correctional Facility where 16 escaped. Of the 18, a total of 11 inmates have been rearrested, two more were killed in a shootout while five inmates are still at large.

“A total of six correctional officials have been arrested and charged with aiding an escape.”

Monama urges the community to report any information if they suspect someone is an escapee. They should not approach such persons themselves.
