Boyfriend arrested for allegedly setting shack on fire

Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Nkemeleng Mabula confirmed a case of arson was opened at the Dawn Park SAPS on September 1.

A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting alight his girlfriend’s rented shack in the early hours of September 1.

Idah Mutoke from Villa Liza has been left devastated after her rented shack she slept in for one day was burnt to ashes. Mutoke said on August 29 she was chased from her house by her boyfriend.

“He told me to leave the house, he doesn’t want me anymore. I then phoned the police and told them I need them to accompany me to my boyfriend’s house so I can fetch my belongings.

The police came and I took my belongings and went to Freedom Park to try and build a shack.

“A neighbour saw I had nowhere else to go, as the shack was still being built. She told me I can stay in her neighbour’s shack who doesn’t live there anymore.

“I slept in that shack on August 30 and the following day my boyfriend somehow found out where I lived and he started harassing me. He came to the shack and banged on the door and windows shouting I stole some of his belongings.”

The 31-year-old woman said on the night of August 31 she didn’t sleep in the rented shack for fear of her boyfriend possibly coming at night and killing her.

According to Mutoke, when she returned to the shack on the morning of September 1 she realised the shack was burnt down.

“I lost everything, my clothes, furniture and my passport. The worst part is the shack I slept in for one day wasn’t even mine,” she said.

Zola Tamela, who was assigned to look after the shack, said he doesn’t know how he will explain to the owner what happened. “I am even scared to phone the owner because she left the shack in my care, now all her belongings are no more,” Tamela said.

Mutoke and Tamela are pleading for assistance from the community to assist them by donating corrugated iron, food, clothes, blankets and toiletries.

To assist you may contact Mutoke on 060 477 4889 and Themba Nkani (community leader) on 073 671 0014.
