Residents want to stop erection of ‘illegal’ cellphone mast

Residents remain worried about the possibility of a cellphone mast being erected so close to their home, which could impact their health.

Residents of Delmore Park are up in arms about a construction of what appears to be a cellphone mast on one of the community’s residential streets, Malcolm Avenue.

Residents believe that it is being erected illegally and they demanded that the metro takes actions against whoever is responsible.

A resident, Kennedy Smith, who lives close to the spot where the mast is expected to be installed, recently noticed workers digging, and he initially assumed that it was municipality contractors working on the water pipeline.

Smith, however, later noticed that they were building what appears to be a foundation for a cellphone mast.

“I believe that this is being done illegally because we as residents had not been made aware of such a construction. If this was legal, residents should have been informed beforehand.

“Whoever is behind this mast had not held any public participation meetings to assess the community’s feelings on it.

“We are very concerned about the risk that this cellphone mast is likely to pose to residents’ health,” said Smith.

Ward 33 councillor Ashley Hoods said he was only made aware of the issue the day the alleged construction of the foundation of the mast started.

“The community phoned me and I immediately went to the site to investigate. The contractor told me that it was approved and they promised to send me proof.

“The contractor said the land on which the mast will be erected forms part of the railway line property,” said Hoods.

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
