Brink dies from seizure following another amputation

Brink was a paramedic for many years and has stayed in Boksburg for the past 14 years.

Recently, the Advertiser reported on a horror story which unfolded at two government hospitals, affecting the same patient.

Boksburg paramedic Peter Andrew Brink, also known as Andy, witnessed three of his own toes amputated, and without apparently receiving proper medical care, had no other option but to have his right leg amputated just below the knee.

Less than a month later Andy has died, a couple of days after a further amputation.

Brink used to be treated for his diabetic condition, which used to affect his feet, at Edenvale Hospital.

Brink was sent from one doctor to the next, eventually ending up at Steve Biko Academic Hospital where his surgery was rescheduled several times.

He only received proper treatment after 16 days, resulting in the small wound on his foot to cause his leg amputation just below the knee.

After the terrible experience, Andy was left in shock and was still disorientated.

There seemed to be hope as a local doctor offered to donate a prosthetic to Andy as soon as he was well enough.

Unfortunately, this good deed will not turn in to reality.

According to his fiance, Dawn Henery, Brink was readmitted to Pholosong Hospital in Brakpan on August 1 as he had an infection in his wound.

His leg was further amputated to just above the knee on August 7.

“The amputation was successful, but on August 9 at about 8am he had a seizure,” said Dawn.

“When the nurses got to him, he already stopped breathing and he had no pulse.”

CPR was given, but 30 minutes later Brink was declared dead.

Brink’s life was celebrated on August 18 at Thrive Church in Edenvale.
