Metro’s new junior councillors inaugurated

The Junior Council is a programme led by the City’s Citizen Responsibility Campaigns Office working with the Gauteng Department of Education to educate school learners about the local government systems.

 

Altogether, 135 Grade 9 and 10 learners were inaugurated as the City of Ekurhuleni’s junior Councillors on Thursday, August 16 at the Council Chambers in Germiston.

“Learners are elected to serve as junior councillors, and the election it is done through geographical and gender representation,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson

The sitting saw six new office bearers being sworn in the positions of Junior Mayor, Junior Deputy Mayor, Junior Speaker, Junior Deputy Speaker, Junior Chairperson of Chairpersons and Junior Spokesperson.

Gadebe said the criteria for election included a two-minute presentation by candidates, motivating why they are fit for the positions they aspired to occupy.

“The Council was abuzz with spirited and robust contestation as each candidate passionately explained how they would add value to the structure.

“In her address, Speaker of Council Alderman Patricia Kumalo emphasised the importance of educating learners about local governance systems through platforms such as the Junior City Council.”

The following learners were elected as the new office bearers for Junior Council.

Mayor – Katlego Makgata; Deputy Mayor – Arthur Lukhozi; Speaker – Manthepa Setena; Deputy Speaker – Kabelo Hlongwane; Chair of Chairs – Phuthi Lamola; Spokesperson – Katlego Mambana.
