Family fun walk this weekend to raise cancer awareness

The walk covers three distances of 2km, 5km and 7.9km.

The Shuffling Walking Team will host a family fun walk for cancer awareness at the St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview on Sunday, July 29.

Attendees can look forward to Nicole da Silva from 5FM who will be the event director with other local artists.

Gates will open at 6.30am and the walk will start at 8am.

Entry fee is R100.

The Shuffling Walk Team was founded by Maria da Silva who lives in Beyers Park and Marinda Garrana in 2012.

Today, the group consists of 16 members who hail from Benoni, Boksburg, Edenvale and Bedfordview.

Da Silva said the purpose of the walk is to create awareness in the community as well as to raise funds for their chosen charities.

Their beneficiaries are The Breast Health Foundation, Hospice East Rand, Stepping Stones Hospice Alberton, The Sunflower Fund and Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation.

“Every year, from the money we raise, we then divide it among our beneficiaries. We have also supported other people with cancer including Kerryn’s Leukemia Fund and many more.

“When we started in 2012 we raised R26 000 and last year we raised R366 695. This year our target is R500 000.”

She thanked the sponsors and those who have supported them over the years.
