Rapist sentenced to 36 years in prison

The following case was recently finalised in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court:

Mxolisi Ngcobo from Nguni hostel was on July 12 sentenced to 36 years for three different serious criminal offences.

On April 16 the accused pleaded not guilty on count one (kidnapping), count two (rape) and count three (rape). He was, however, subsequently found guilty as charged.

Count one, kidnapping: The accused deprived the victim, a woman who was at the time 27 years old, of her freedom by dragging her from a tavern to an open space before taking her to his shack against her will, on April 15, 2017.

Count two and three, rape: On the same day, Ngcobo raped the victim multiple times in the open veld. Later on the same day, Ngcobo raped the same woman multiple times at his shack.

The suspect has no previous conviction and was sentenced as follow: count one six years’ imprisonment, count two 15 years’ imprisonment and count three 15 years.

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently. Magistrate Siren Harichand presided and prosecutor Nkosazana Tyeku represented the state.
