Reiger Park detectives commended for their outstanding work

Convictions have been obtained in cases that include rape, murder and theft, as well as possession and dealing in drugs.

The team of detectives investigating criminal cases in the Reiger Park policing precinct has been applauded for the major breakthrough in a number of serious cases.

According to the head of Reiger Park SAPS detective branch, Capt David Snell, his members have been able to secure good convictions.

In April, this year, the Reiger Park detective branch was rated the Ekurhuleni Central SAPS Cluster’s top detectives, and they came forth in the provincial best performing detective branch category. In May, the branch came second in the cluster.

“I’m very proud of my members. I have a team of very dedicated members with a strong sense of teamwork,” said Snell.

In one of their high profile cases, the team worked tirelessly since early last year chasing leads in the April 1, 2017 kidnaping, rape and murder of Chrisania Carelse, of Ramaphosa, who was 10-years-old at the time of her attack.

The little girl was abducted, raped and killed before her naked body was found dumped in the veld next to the ZCC Church, in Elsburg Road, on April 1.

In connection with the crimes, detectives subsequently arrested Ashly Johnson who was at the time 18-years-old. He made several court appearances before he was on June 20, this year, convicted of the crime. Johnson will be sentenced on July 23.

Snell urged residents to play their part in the fight against crime by reporting any suspicious activities to the police, saying working together can make Reiger Park a much safer place to live in.
