Local theatre coach to mentor and learn in the United States

Louw Breytenbach will not only teach American students (ages eight to 13) but will learn how their children theatre programmes work as well.

It is exciting times for the Live Arts Little Theatre in Boksburg, especially for owner Louw Breytenbach.

He will be travelling to the United States of America for an internship to teach and also learn about American performing arts at theatres and drama camps during July.

This will enable him to bring his skills and experiences back to students in the Boksburg community.

Breytenbach recently paid a visit to Florida where he learned more about the Serenbe Screenhouse Theater in Atlanta. Serenbe presents plays that are specifically aimed at the youth and has won several awards, including an American Tony.

Breytenbach has since been invited to attend one of Serenbe’s drama camps in Atlanta, as well as New York from July 13.

Breytenbach will be the only international coach that will attend the camp.

“Learners from all over America apply to be part of the camp and productions,” said Breytenbach.

“The methods and ideas that I will witness and learn of during my time in the United States will be used in our community classes in Boksburg, where we mostly work with children to prepare them to for the world of theatre,” said Breytenbach.

The internship will take place over about two weeks where he will visit four different theatres, while attending the drama camp.

“The students will have one week to put together a musical with their mentors. At the end of the week the production will be performed for their parents and casting agents from New York and Atlanta,” said Breytenbach.

Breytenbach will be the first South African to be invited to coach at one of these drama camps.

“It is a big opportunity, I am extremely excited. My dream is to present South African performing arts camps, like Camp Rock. This has never been done in our country on a large scale.

“With the help of our new contacts from Atlanta, we will definitely be aiming to host the first camp in South Africa at the end of October.”
