Women’s Desk in Reiger Park to tackle social ills impacting women, children

The Women's Desk is a subforum for women residing within the station’s policing precinct.

In conjunction with the CPF and the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, the Reiger Park SAPS has officially launched its Women’s Desk.

Dozens of women from all the different communities falling under the Reiger Park SAPS gathered at Reiger Park Secondary for the launch event on June 23, where they also elected 10 members for the executive committee.

The different communities include Reiger Park, Ramaphosa, Delmore Gardens, Delmore Park, Joe Slovo, Delmore and Ulana informal settlements.

The Women’s Desk currently consists of about 50 women and its function is to deal with social ills and other various issues pertaining to women and children’s safety in their respective communities.

These include creating awareness and educating people on child abuse, domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse among children and women, sexual assault, as well as reaching out to the less fortunate and encouraging young people to prioritise education.

These women kept the crowd well entertained with their Sotho traditional dance moves during the launch event.

The subforum also focuses on encouraging the women of their communities to become actively involved in the fight against crime and violence; be the eyes and ears of the police, be able to report any suspicious activities in their respective areas, and also to build a culture of learning, tolerance and respect for all.

The women structure was launched with much excitement, and a local traditional Sotho dance group kept the crowd entertained throughout the event.

Also present at the event were Department of Community Safety’s Manana Mlisa, Reiger Park CPF chairperson Isaac Makhalanyane, Reiger Park SAPS Crime Prevention’s Const Jan Mokwana, and sector managers Const Unathi Lindiso and Sgt Lufuno Mudzuli.

To join the structure residents may contact Const Jan Mokwana on 071 676 0555 or Sgt Lufuno Mudzuli on 071 675 8555.
