Mega housing project well underway in Parkdene

The entire project is expected to be completed during the 2023/2024 financial year.

Phase one of the civil works construction on the Leeuwpoort housing development to establish a township in Parkdene Extension Seven is well underway.

The main contractor, Civtek Civil Engineering Contractors, and its subcontractors have already started with the construction of roads, streets, sewer system, stormwater system and parks and the removal of unwanted vegetation.

Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos said the project is only in its initial phase as yet, but it’s looking quite promising. He added that there has been strict adherence to the environmental rules so far.

The Cinderella hostel will be demolished, but its hospital building will remain because it is protected by the National Heritage Resources Act. The Wesleyan Church and indigenous trees and animals of the area will also be protected.

De Vos, however, stated that he is concerned about the future of the residents of the Cinderella hostel whose homes will, as part of the project, be razed to the ground.

The Parkdene building currently being used by informal traders will be razed to make way for the mega housing project.

“Lovemore Chauke from the office of the Ekurhuleni MMC for Human Settlements confirmed that the residents of the hostel will be relocated, but it is still unclear as to where these people will be relocated to,” said de Vos.

Taking into consideration that the community at the hostel has been settled in the area for a very long time, the metro will have to offer them an alternative place not very far from their original homes, de Vos said.

“Land for public amenities has been earmarked, but I am concerned that none of the provincial government departments have been brought on board for the planned schools and health centres, which form part of the projects.” -@MthuphaFanie
