DA calls for Office of Health Standards Compliance to look into the death of twins

The DA has submitted five Parliamentary questions to the Minister of Health regarding the matter of the twins death.

The DA has confirmed it is looking into the matter of a mother’s ordeal whose twins apparently were left to die at Tambo Memorial Hospital.

During April the Advertiser ran a print exclusive story of Rechael Tamine, who was ready to welcome identical twin daughters into the world.

But her beautiful family were left incomplete and heartbroken after the twins were born at 27 weeks and then, according to the mother, left to die.

“I would have rather gone to another hospital if I knew that Tambo Memorial was going to leave my babies to die, tied up in a bundle of cloth and alone,” said Tamine to the Advertiser.
Tamine at the time made contact with Dr Vis Naidoo, chief executive officer at Tambo Memorial, on Whatsapp, sending him a photo of her deceased twins and saying it was the worst service that she could have asked for.
On February 6, Rechael had a meeting with Naidoo during which he informed her that both babies were “not viable to live”. After a long battle, a nurse agreed to sign an admission of guilt about incorrectly stating the cause of death and Rechael was then able to bury her babies.
The Advertiser asked Naidoo for comment and the response offered was that “all the concerns raised were adequately addressed”.
In the meantime, Michael Waters MP, DA Deputy Chief Whip in the National Assembly and Lethabong Constituency Head, said he was outraged by the treatment the mother received.
“No person should have to endure this type of treatment, where babies are simply left to suffocate,” said Waters.
“Most shocking of the report was the allegation that a nurse simply wrapped the new-born babies up in a blanket, apparently assuming that they would not survive. Sadly, the babies died soon after.”

He subsequently wrote to both the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) as well as the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) requesting them to investigate the matter from different angels.

“Since then, I welcome the commitment by the OHSC and the South African Nursing Council to investigate the death of new-born twin girls following alleged neglect by staff at the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

“As far as the SAHRC is concerned I have asked them to investigate the human rights violations of not only of the mother but also that of her two baby girls.

He said with regards to the OHSC, he asked them to investigate;

  • Whether any protocols/ norms and standards were transgressed and if so which ones and by whom?
  • What the reasons were that a patient is admitted to a ward without any beds and why she was not attended to, by medical staff?
  • What the reasons were that the twins were not immediately placed in incubators and left to suffocate to death?
  • What action has been taken against all the staff implicated in the death of the twins?

“I expect both institutions to conduct thorough investigations and there will be consequences,” said Waters.
