House-robbery syndicate cracked in Freeway Park

Among the suspects arrested was a sangoma.

Boksburg SAPS stationed Ekurhuleni Central Cluster Trio Task Team members acting on a tip-off have busted a house-robbery syndicate operating from a Freeway Park house.

Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko said a team led by Det Const Vernon Booysen and Det Sgt Calvin Mphaphuli, acting on a tip-off, stormed the suspects’ house in Freeway Park.

They discovered valuable goods suspected to be stolen during house robberies in Boksburg and other areas. The goods were being kept in some of the rooms of the residential property and they include expensive electrical appliances and clothing.

Upon further investigation, it was established that some of the goods were stolen during a house robbery as far as Reitz in the Free State. The owners have already identified their belongings.

The owner of the house, a 61-year-old woman, was placed under arrest.

Also during the raid, police found additional suspected stolen goods in the room of a Mozambican man identified as a Sangoma operating in the house. It is alleged that the robbers first consulted with the sangoma before they hit their next target.

The sangoma was arrested.

“While detectives were still carrying out their investigation on the property, they noticed four more suspicious men entering the house in question driving a Renault Megane.

“Upon investigation, it appears as if the men are responsible for the spate of violent crimes in Boksburg and surrounding areas,” said Maseko.

According to Maseko, the four men, who live in Tsakani, told the police that they had come to consult the sangoma, before police requested to search them.

Thereupon police found three illegal firearms in the suspects’ possessions.

They were all arrested and charged with possession of illegal firearms. The firearms had their serial numbers filed off and will be sent in for ballistic tests. The suspects’ vehicle was seized.

Two other occupants of the house were also arrested, with the one later then released.

An identity parade will be conducted.

Those who have recently been victims to house robbers are encouraged to come forward to identify the suspects.

Contact the investigating officers Booysen and Mphaphuli on 071 422 7417 to take part in the identity parade.

The suspects appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today (June 15). They were remanded in custody and the case postponed to next week. They are facing possession of stolen goods, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition charges.

Investigation continues and more charges could be added.

The team of detectives were applauded for the breakthrough and working tirelessly chasing leads in murder and house robbery cases in the area.
