‘Art in 67 Minutes’ to show support for Mandela’s legacy

Plantation-based Urban Ruins offers free and safe children play areas. It also runs a variety of other programmes for children, including cycling development, reading and literacy development, a book club, ECD and art development programmes.

Urban Ruins invites all local schools to take part in its competitive art challenges, called ‘Art in 67 Minutes’.

The challenge is to celebrate the life of the late anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.

This year, for Mandela Day, artists from the different schools are encouraged to submit their works of art which they completed in 67 minutes.

All art pieces must be submitted to the centre’s gallery on July 9, to allow the public enough chance to view them.

As part of the celebration, the artistic pieces will be judged by professionals and the winners will receive prizes. The winning art pieces will be auctioned during the evening on July 18, and the all proceeds will go to the development of the centre’s art project.

All the programmes at Urban Ruins are offered free of charge to children of many creeds, cultures, race and class.

The aim is to develop and restore the children’s confidence and give them a sense of purpose.

“After four years of litigation struggles, we have successfully been granted our consent of use to operate as a child care centre, and we now hope for your support,” said Lesley Makitla.
