Penguin Room to host van Gogh exhibition

The exhibition will be a new chapter for the Penguin Room as it will be filled with beautiful art, music, artists and their guests.

The Boksburg Creative Art Centre’s Penguin Room is going to re-open with Vincent van Gogh as the ‘guest’ of honour.

The centre will be hosting an exhibition called “Loving Vincent” on June 21 from 10am. This theme was specially inspired by the film Loving Vincent that was recently released.

According to artist Barry de Villiers, the exhibition with the van Gogh theme is going to be one for the books.

“Locals are invited to be part of the celebration with their own artworks,” said de Villiers.

In its heyday, the Penguin Room (so named after a donation of art supplies from Penguin stationers) hosted all sorts of wonderful artistic events, like prize-givings, lectures, exhibitions and themed evenings and it will now return to its glory.

De Villiers, who is also the custodian of the Creative Art Centre in Market Street, is extremely excited for the event.

“I look forward with great excitement to again turning the Penguin Room into a fairy-tale venue for the arts,” said de Villiers

Since the Penguin Room recently received a tip-to-toe clean up, thanks to local cleaning company AMPM Cleaning, de Villiers and his art students have been excitedly planning the room’s reopening.

De Villiers aims to reinstate all the wonders of the arts for the community now that they once again have full use of the Penguin Room.

The room stood unused for three years, occupied only by pigeons and heaps of pigeon poop thanks to broken windows.

“We are re-energised and excited about our art centre,” de Villiers said.

Local artists who too are inspired by van Gogh are welcome to be part of the grand opening exhibition and activities.

“Our students are hard at work recreating their Van Gogh-inspired works for the opening day.”

He said the Loving Vincent exhibition will be a delightful morning tea occasion with someone once again behind the piano in the Penguin Room.

“Wonderful artworks will be on display, along with a beautiful mix of local folk and delicious tea-time treats,” de Villiers said.

The exhibit will also be opened by appointment on May 22 and 23.
