Academy’s career expo to help the youth make the right choice

In line with the central objective of Mandela Day, YDN will be hosting the June/July Career Expo at the Sunward Park High School on July 21.

BCom Accounting graduate Dimpho Thobejane and her friends are planning to host the biggest and memorable career expo in Boksburg but they need your help.

Thobejane and her two friends, Yvonne Mahlangu and Nolwazi Msimango, are the founders of the Youth Develops the Nation (YDN) Academy which was established in 2015. Its aim is to assist young people.

The YDN Academy provides Saturday extra lessons classes to learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 (focusing on English, mathematics, accounting, life sciences and physical science), varsity outings, assisting with online university applications and many more.

“Our aim of hosting the expo is to expose the learners to different career paths and to strengthen their existing career choices,” said Thobejane.

“A lot of young people in matric don’t know what they want to study after matric so we want to equip them with knowledge so that they’ll be able to make informed career decisions.

“Also, registrations for universities and colleges open around September and companies even offer bursaries around this time. So, if the learners know what career path they want to venture in, it will be easier for them to apply.”

Thobejane said they have a target of 700 learners of which 600 of these learners are from Reiger Park and Sunward Park high schools.

“I have 100 tickets up for grabs to matric learners in any schools who will be interested to attend. They just need to email me a motivational letter on why he/she wants to attend the expo.”

The YDN Academy has approached five companies who will be exhibiting their products or services on the day.

“Our plea is for more companies, departments, universities and colleges to come on board and exhibit at this event.

“We are also in need of financial assistance to enable us to hire buses, food and décor,” Thobejane said.

Attendees can look forward to having access to applying for bursaries and learnerships, cash prizes, hampers and surprise performances.

Learners who are interested in attending the career expo can send an email to Thobejane at ydnacademy@gmail.com
