Eight years imprisonment for 83 counts of fraud

The accused was initially charged with 569 counts of fraud, but the state accepted a plea on 83 charges.

The Boksburg Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 45-year-old woman, Renay Martin of Cloverdene, to eight years imprisonment after she was convicted on 83 counts of fraud.

Three years of her sentence was suspended for five years.

On February 16 she was found guilty on all counts of fraud against Ramfab Steel Services, which were then counted together for the purposes of sentencing on May 14.

Martin was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The woman defrauded Ramfab Steel Services of a substantial amount of money while she was working for the company during the period between August 2014 and May 2016.

Her duties included payment of creditors, the management of cash received from customers, petty cash and the depositing thereof.

Martin would on various occasions change her personal account’s name to reflect those of the various company creditors. She would then increase the amount due or payable to the creditors and request authorisation for the payment of the increased amount she claimed is owed to the different creditors.

This would then result in the money being paid to her account, unbeknownst to her employers. She would then transfer the actual amount owed to the creditors and keep the balance for herself.

The 83 cases totalled more than R1-million in fraud.
