Cleaning of sewage leads to foetus discovery

Investigations into the abandoned foetus are underway.

A service delivery issue regarding a blocked drain has led to the shocking discovery of an abandoned foetus.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s (Sanca) Horizon Alcohol and Drug Centre in Plantation initially contacted the Advertiser on May 8 to complain about a service delivery query.

The centre, located on the corner of Railway and Elm streets, had grown frustrated with the blocked drain that has caused sewage to overflow into the street.

“The drain is next to the kitchen where we prepare food for the patients,” said Coleen Lindeque, personal assistant to the director.

Lindeque said the smell was so unbearable that they started cleaning up the sewage themselves on the afternoon of May 8. This then led to the discovery of the foetus.

The Boksburg SAPS were contacted and removed the foetus.

Sgt Cebisa Maseko of the Boksburg SAPS confirmed that the foetus was found in Plantation and that a docket has been opened.

Regarding the drain itself, the centre said they have complained to the metro on numerous occasions, and that after a month nothing has still been done.

The centre has several complaint reference numbers.
