Pakistani eligible to vote in SA
The Department of Home Affairs stated that according to the National Population Register, the Pakistani man entered South Africa in May 2004 and got naturalised in March 2009.
The Pakistani national who was refused the right to update his address details at the Hoërskool Voortrekker voting station is indeed a South African citizen.
The Advertiser recently reported that the Pakistani in question made his way to the voting station during the national voter registration weekend on March 11.
Officials at the station were, however, not convinced that his identity documents were legitimate and he was referred to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices.
The IEC also confirmed that the Pakistani’s ID is registered on the voters’ roll, saying the commission receives the national population register from the National Department of Home Affairs.
Above all, Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos told the Advertiser the man in question was turned away because his ID number does not accord with the other information on his identity document.
The home affairs department has, however, failed to give a direct explanation for the said discordant.
All of this means the Pakistani is eligible to vote in government elections, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed.
