The ANC Ekurhuleni Caucus Chief Whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi and Exco/Whippery members embarked on site visits throughout Ekurhuleni recently.
The purpose of the visits were to monitor the progress of various housing development projects that are underway in the metro.
“This is part of the government’s commitment of ensuring proper accountability and oversight,” said Thabang Mashiyane of the Office of The Chief Whip.
“The visits formed part of our strong oversight role to ensure that we deliver our commitment to build 100 000 houses, electrify all informal settlements and provides 59 000 service stands to the residents of Ekurhuleni.”
Dlabathi, along with the Exco members, began the tour by checking the progress of the human settlement development in Leeuwpoort.
The private and public housing development partnership, worth around R8.9-billion, is set to provide 22 000 houses over the next seven years.
The tour also led to Extension 22 in Tsakane to inspect the living conditions, the John Dube Mega City Development (which will result in 10 000 housing units being
built), and Ward 61 in Daveyton.
“The government is very serious about human settlement and so we’ll closely monitor all projects on a regular basis,” said Dlabathi.
“We also want to push for the acceleration of allocation of houses and verification of beneficiaries, especially the 1996 list so that they can be given a priority.”
