Mall robbery: Shootout ensues as police follow up on lead into whereabouts of murder suspect

Police managed to arrest the wanted suspect while a shopper also got shot

The shooting at East Rand Mall this afternoon was not related to a store robbery.

According to Capt Mavela Masondo, the SAPS were following a lead regarding  a murder suspect.

“We received information that the wanted suspect was at East Rand Mall,” said Masando.

“Upon arrival at the East Rand Mall, the officers managed to arrest the suspect. While arresting the suspect, four other men started shooting at the police and a shootout occurred between the police and the armed men.

“Three of men managed to flee but the police managed to arrest one of the four, who was shot during the shootout, along with the wanted suspect.

“During the shootout, a mall security guard got shot and he died on the scene, while a woman believed to be a shopper was shot in her lower body and she was rushed to hospital.”

A case of murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm, which was retrieved from one of the suspects, is being investigated.
