Lift from Beitbridge border ends in ‘robbery’ in Boksburg

A case of common robbery has been opened despite nothing being stolen from the victims.

Two women and a man phoned the Boksburg North Police Station on April 18 at about 3pm, claiming they had been robbed on Rietfontein Road.

According to police communications officer Capt Juanita Coetzer, when officers arrived on scene the victims told them they had got a lift with a man and his passenger from the Beitbridge border post the day before at 9pm, on their way to Johannesburg.

The one victim, however, wanted to be dropped off in Pretoria but the driver ignored the request and drove to Boksburg.

The victims became agitated when they realised this and insisted on getting out of the vehicle.

“They told us the driver then became aggressive,” said Coetzer.

“He stopped the car along Rietfontein Road and insisted on cash, but the victims didn’t hand over any money.

“The victims then got out of the car and the driver and his passenger ran away, abandoning the car, a blue Toyota Tazz.

“A security guard assisted the victims in contacting the police. We brought the car to Boksburg North SAPS and it was searched. Nothing suspicious was found.”

A case of common robbery was opened but Coetzer said nothing was stolen from the victims.

She added that the police haven’t managed to make contact with the victims again by phone since the incident.

“We’re trying to trace the registered owner of the vehicle to try to shed some light on this strange incident,” Coetzer said.
