No need for children to fear the police

Children were also urged to report any abuse meted out against them to the police by calling 10111.

As part of a crime prevention initiative, the Boksburg SAPS’ Social Crime Prevention Unit visited Jerusalem Community Crèche and Tswelopele Pre-School to give a talk on the role of the police in the community.

Speaking during the event on Wednesday morning (April 11) Boksburg SAPS’ Sgt Cebisa Maseko spoke about the police and the good that police do in the community.

She also stated because of misinformation in society, the police are aware that some children still fear the police and see them as enemies.

Maseko, however, put the record straight and told the children that police are not enemies of communities, but good friends who are there to protect and serve.

“For us to have a strong working relationship with communities, it is very important to ensure that the law-abiding public, the youth, in particular, regard us as their protectors who are always on their side,” said Maseko.

After the talk, children were also treated to Easter snacks.

The principal of the school, Gloria Ramasunza, was also present and she gave a special thanks to the members of the SAPS for visiting her school.

“We are very happy and this makes us feel that, despite living in a squatter camp, the police still care for us. We are not being forgotten,” said Ramasunza. -@MthuphaFanie
