Watch: Graduates honoured at Boksburg Correctional Services

During the learnership the graduates went through theory, portfolio of evidence, formative and summative assessments.

A group of 65 learners, who were part of the Department of Correctional Services’ Learnership Programme 2016/17 graduated on April 6, at the Boksburg Correctional Services Centre.

The day was held in partnership with Liberty Life.

Before the handover of the certificates, area commissioner Henny Makhubela, said the idea behind this was to ensure that their officials receive some training and guidance on financial literacy.

“We don’t want correction services officials who will sell drugs to inmates because they want to make quick cash,” Makhubela said.

“Learn to do things at your own pace. When you become greedy to drive fancy cars and have a lot of money, you’ll be shooting yourself in the foot.

“Everyone here is still young – enjoy your youth responsibly and study to empower yourselves.”

“Today we handed out accredited certificates of competency,” Ladi Kekana, area co-ordinator, said.

“This session was important to empower them and give them tools in understanding the environment they’ll be working under in the Department of Correctional Services.

“If we don’t mentor them they will be swallowed by the system.”

One of the graduates, Busisiwe Radebe, said the most valued training she took from the learnership programme was how to rehabilitate offenders and install change in them.
