Pi Day was celebrated on March 14 around the world.
At St Dominic’s, the mathematics department uses Pi Day as an annual opportunity for St Dominic maths enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, play games, and to eat pie.
Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point – it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern.
While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorise and to computationally calculate more and more digits.
Hilda Maseko (Grade 10) was the overall winner. She memorised 529 digits of Pi.
