Summies raises R60 000 for Cansa

The East Rand Cansa Relay for Life took place at PG Park, in Boksburg, on March 9 and 10.

Summerfields Primary in Impala Park lifted the trophy as the school which raised the most money for this year’s East Rand Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay for Life.

The school raised R60 000 for this good cause.

It was the fourth year the school supported the event and this year they had a team of over 100 participants, made up of teachers, learners, grandparents and cancer survivors.

The money was raised through donations from learners and their families and for every R5 000 raised, school principal Joe Bantich agreed to allow the teachers to either colour or shave their hair.

While most opted for a bright new hairdo, one brave teacher, Shantal Abbotts, shaved her hair in support of the cause!

The staff were grateful that this year’s neon hair dye was sponsored by Punked.

Lizelle Lewis, the owner of Punked, said she is always happy to be part of fund-raising events that raise awarenes about cancer as this is a cause very close to her heart.

“My niece, Michelle Lewis, died of cancer at the age of 21 and since then I’ve been involved in a lot of projects in her memory.”
