Heavy rainfall to cease by this afternoon; remain cautious

It is expected that the rainfall will ease significantly during Friday afternoon as the weakening system moves off into the Indian ocean.

Widespread, heavy rainfall continues overnight across Gauteng, causing localised flooding in certain areas.Significant rainfall amounts were already observed overnight in parts of Gauteng.

The rainfall is due to a surface high pressure system which is transporting large amounts of moisture to the eastern parts of South Africa. At the same time a sharp upper air trough is moving across the central parts of the country, resulting in very unstable conditions.
