From Libradene to New York Fashion Week

Jean's House of Hair and Beauty was named Wella Colour Salon of the Year 2017.

Libradene hair stylist Jane Todd recently won a prize which landed her in the heart of the Big Apple and styling hair behind the scenes of the New York Fashion Week.

Jane said her salon, Jean’s House of Hair and Beauty, which she owns with her son, Andrew Todd, was recently named Wella Colour Salon of the Year 2017.

As an add-on to this prestigious awards ceremony, Wella launched a nationwide promotion with several grand prizes for stylists and salons which were using the brand’s more exclusive products.

The grand prize was an all-expenses-paid trip to the New York Fashion Week, which took place from February 8 to 16, as part of Aubrey Loots’ team of stylists.

Aubrey, a Wella Professionals Top Artist, is a South African who has lived in Los Angeles (LA) for the past 23 years. He also works the LA and Paris fashion weeks and is co-owner of a salon in LA.

Nelmarie Kruger (a Pretoria salon owner who was also part of the team), Aubrey Loots and Jane Todd.

“When I heard I’d won, I nearly died!” Jane said. “It was so unexpected and there was such little time to get my life organised. “I tried to convince Andrew to go in my place, but he was insistent that I go.

“It was my first visit to New York and an unbelievable experience.”

Aubrey’s team did 10 fashion shows in 10 days – sometimes two shows a day – at various locations around New York.

“Most required a really early start, like 4am, but it was so thrilling and busy we hardly noticed the time,” said Jane.

“We also had time for sightseeing and paid a visit to some famous hair salons, including Vidal Sassoon, to see how they operate.

“Being part of Aubrey’s team was wonderful. He is such a professional but also down-to-earth and relaxed.”

Jane added that the models and designers were all a pleasure to work with too.

The trends out of New York Fashion Week were a lot of ponytails (high, low and with twists) and textured, wavy, classic styles.

“The teamwork, between professionals from all over the world, was amazing. I learnt a lot and was honoured to be part of the team,” said Jane.

“And now I know why they call New York the city that never sleeps!”

Jane is excited to impart her new-found knowledge to the staff at her Boksburg salon.
