A Grade Eight Boksburg High School learner who lives in Vosloorus, was admitted to hospital on March 8 and diagnosed with listeriosis.
This was confirmed by the learner’s father, who said she was suffering from a high fever, vomiting and diarrhoea at the time of being admitted.
She was released from hospital the next day and returned to school on March 12.
The father told the Advertiser he was concerned that his child had picked up the bacteria in food sold from the school’s tuck shop.
Boksburg High principal Helene Boshoff said processed meat products were not being served at the tuck shop and that this was in line with the recall of processed meats following the announcement by the ministry of health on March 4.
She added that the school’s student governing body would formally respond, but no comment has been received as yet.
