Hope wanes for injured bulbul

There are fears the bird might be dead

The injured bulbul has not been seen since February 28.

A Beyers Park resident spotted the bulbul in his garden in mid-January, with a dart from a blowgun through its head and neck.

The resident, Brian Stratton, was advised by the Boksburg SPCA to feed the bird daily and keep a box close to the feeding area to make it easier to catch the bird with a trap box.

Unfortunately, the SPCA was not able to catch the bird as planned this past weekend, as the bird did not come back to feed.

“We think perhaps the dart was knocked against something and moved, unfortunately killing the bird,” said Maggie Mudd, manager of the SPCA.

“This is obviously just an assumption, but to not see a bird (who has been coming regularly to a garden to feed) for this length of time, indicates that something has happened to the bird to prevent it from coming to feed.”

Mudd reiterated that the SPCA will not hesitate to prosecute anyone caught torturing animals in this manner.

“It is sad as we were quite hopeful that we would be able to trap the bird and have a happy ending to its suffering,” she said.

The injured bulbul crept into the hearts of the Boksburg community, many of whom expressed shock at the bird’s injury on the Advertiser’s Facebook page.

Anyone who spots the bird or has information about how it sustained the injury should contact the SPCA on 011 916 5906/7.
