Harold Volbrecht speaks out on Tommy Oosthuizen’s next fight claims

Trainer Harold Volbrecht had also thrown in the towel in the past on the man he has treated like a father. The two has since reunited.

Reports have circulated that Tommy Oosthuizen and Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman have buried the hatchet.

This has triggered the possibility of Oosthuizen facing Thabiso Mchunu in the upcoming months, despite the Advertiser reporting that the professional boxer is awaiting trial on drug charges which is scheduled for March 19.

Berman and Oosthuizen have had their differences in the last few years following a string of misdemeanours by the pugilist which have currently landed him behind bars.

Asked for clarity on Oosthuizen getting back into the squared circle while he’s currently in custody, Volbrecht responded: “We hope he gets released, he’s now got a family to look after, he’s got a six-month-year-old boy.

“If he does get released, the fight will definitely not be this month, maybe around June because he just won’t be ready for this month.”

Asked about the surprising change of heart by Berman to work with him and his trainee, Volbrecht explained: “Rodney Berman is doing me a favour, he’s not doing Tommy a favour, if we get an opportunity to fight Mchunu or even Kevin Lerena, I’d grab the opportunity,” said the respected mentor and decorated boxer.

On his own reconciliation with Oosthuizen, 29, Volbrecht said: “Following a month or two after his loss, he came to see me. He’s a boxer, his profession is boxing, boxing is all he knows how to do well. I don’t want to see him holding a board on the streets begging.

“I told him I’m just his boxing manager and trainer; I told his friends and family I don’t want to get involved with his things outside of boxing anymore. I had enough of his nonsense. I hope this will be the end of Tommy’s problems.”

Berman could not be reached for comment.

Oosthuizen’s loss Volbrecht mentioned above was Oosthuizen’s first in his career, dampening his professional fighting record to 27-2-1; 16. – @SabeloBoksburg
