SWAT raid uncovers drug lab in Witfield

The raided property and its occupants were under observation for about a week.

Members of the EMPD’s SWAT unit uncovered a secret drug lab operating from a home in Edwards Road, Witfield this morning (March 2).

A couple, believed to be the owners of the property, were arrested at the scene.
Although the police have not yet confirmed details of the raid, the Advertiser understands that members of the SWAT unit had the property and its occupants under observation for about a week after receiving a tip-off about illegal activities in the dwelling.

Their investigation came to a head this morning when the officers raided the property and found a drug lab with 67 dagga plants in various stages of growth.
Chemicals, tools and equipment used to cultivate the weed were also found and seized.

Several police vehicles were lined up outside the property while the SWAT and Hawks officers combed the scene for illegal substances.

The couple, aged 41 and 47, are due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon on charges related to drugs.

Ward 33 councillor Ashley Hoods also arrived at the scene in his capacity as a member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee.

He applauded members of the SWAT team for their efforts to reduce crime levels in the city.

“You guys are doing sterling work in keeping our communities safe and I’m very pleased,” said Hoods.

One of the neighbours, who asked to remain anonymous, also praised the SWAT members for uncovering the drug lab, saying they didn’t need neighbours who were engaged in criminal activities. -@MthuphaFanie
