Having experienced the struggles and hardships of being diagnosed with cancer first hand, local residents Gwen Janse van Rensburg and Myrtle Bell are cancer survivors who are passionate about the Cancer Association of South African (Cansa) Relay for Life.

Both women were diagnosed with breast cancer and now run a cancer support group in Sunward Park.

The Champions Cancer Support Group meets at the Trinity Community Church on Cresta Road, every second Saturday of the month from 2.30pm to 4pm.

Gwen and Myrtle have been taking part in the relay for the past eight years and will again take part this year, on March 9, at PG Park.

“I thought the road had ended for me until I met the Cansa group,” said Myrtle.

Gwen said the Cansa Relay for Life is a celebration of hope.

“You think that you had cancer, you survived cancer and nobody cares – until you actually become involved with others at the relay,” said Gwen.

“This relay is powerful and we encourage everyone to support it and take part.”

Myrtle said the relay is particularly special for cancer survivors and the organisers go out of their way to “spoil” the survivors.

“We celebrate that we survived cancer and for anyone who hasn’t experienced it, the Cansa Relay for Life will be one of the best experiences of their life,” she said.
