All systems go for Cansa Relay for Life at PG Park

Traditionally held at Boksburg Stadium, the relay organisers were not, however, able to secure the stadium this year.

The 2018 Cansa Relay for Life takes place at PG Park for the first time this year, on March 9 and 10.

At the heart of the relay is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember those who have died and to create awareness about cancer.

Sonia Pretorius, the chairperson of Cansa Relay for Life East Rand, said the change of venue is an exciting development for this annual event.

“We then approached PG Park, as well as the Boksburg Rugby Club, and they were so accommodating,” Pretorius said.

“This is a wonderful gesture of community involvement and we are very grateful to the rugby club.

“The club’s committee has been exceptionally supportive and feels honoured to be involved in this community event.”

Anyone who takes part in the relay at PG Park will be taking part in the biggest Cansa Relay for Life in the country, Pretorius boasted.

“The East Rand relay was declared the biggest in the country at the last Relay for Life Summit, which was held in Pretoria, in May last year.

“The East Rand has generated the most income nationally, with Pretoria, George and KwaZulu-Natal as close contenders.”

Awards for Best Income Generation Nationally and Best Average Team Income Generated have also been bestowed on the East Rand Cansa Relay.

So, where do the funds go which the Cansa Relay for Life generates?

Pretorius explained they support 25 research projects at universities and research organisations.

“A portion of our fund-raising also goes to our support centres throughout South Africa as well as our mobile units that offer screening services to the public.”

Important details to note for this year’s Cansa Relay for Life:

* The cut-off for registration is at midnight on March 2. Register at www.relayforlife.org.za

* The theme this year is “Disney”.

* A special survivors’ luncheon takes place before the relay officially starts and this year each survivor will receive a very special gift, which will only be revealed at the function at PG Park on March 9.

* The Cansa and SANBS mobile units will be at the relay, offering various screening and advice services. Netcare 911 will also be there to provide emergency paramedic assistance.
