Today the country celebrates #SANBeerDay

There is no main event – the idea is that restaurants, bars, breweries and liquor stores up and down the country celebrate this day,

International Beer Day (August 3) has been around a while, but it since it falls towards the end of winter in the southern hemisphere, it led to the South African National Beer Day being born in 2017.

This is a time when South Africans can celebrate beer under a sunny summer sky.

According to www,beerday.co.za, #SANBeerDay is a collection of small scale events, promotions, pairings, specials and mini festivals held across the country on the first Saturday in February.

Anyone can hold an event, which is added on the map to be found on the beerday website (this is also where you can see what events are happening on this day).

The inaugural #SANBeerDay in 2017 saw more than 50 events and promotions staged in seven provinces across the country.

This year it seems there are already more than 40 venues that have been confirmed across the country to host an event for the second annual #SANBeerDay.

Responsible drinking

Remember, in South Africa, the legal limit is a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1 000ml or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml. So drink responsibly on national beer day.

The South African government says moderate alcohol consumption does not exceed two standard drinks, which is 340ml or a half quart of beer a day for women and no more than three standard drinks per day for men.

According to SAB, the rule of thumb is a maximum of one unit of alcohol per hour, which constitutes 10ml of pure alcohol, based on an adult weighing 68kg.

Responsible drinking:

  • If you drink beer or wine at home, pour small amounts into your glass.
  • If you fill your glass to the rim, you’ll drink more than you realise. Opt for a smaller glass.
  • Measure your spirits instead of free pouring them.
  • Try and pour your own drinks. If your partner or host is constantly topping up your half-filled glass, it’s hard to keep track of how much alcohol you are drinking.
  • Try tracking your alcohol consumption each day.
  • Opt for half litres if you prefer higher strength lager or try a lower strength drink option.
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks, water or no alcohol beers (that is beers with a less than 0.05 ABV).
