ATM bombers left empty-handed

The safe inside the ATM remained secure

Police have launched a manhunt for thugs who bombed an Absa Bank ATM located at a residential property in Gousblom Street, Reiger Park, during the early hours of January 26.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, preliminary investigations indicate that the bombers used a high-powered explosive device to blow up the cash machine, leaving a trail of destruction.

“Although the machine was badly damaged, no money was stolen – apparently because the safe inside the ATM remained secured,” said Phathela.

The explosive unit team, better known as the bomb squad, was on scene where they launched an investigation into the botched theft.

A case of malicious damage to property was opened and Reiger Park police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 011 916 7000. -@MthuphaFanie
