All kinds of excuses punted for speeding violations

EMPD clamp down on speedsters on our local roads.

Two drivers were caught for excessive speeding on the N12 eastbound, at the Atlas Road turnoff on Sunday morning, between 5am and 8.30am, EMPD spokesperson, chief superintendent Wilfred Kagasago, said at 5.25am an 18-year-old man, driving a Nissan Livina, registered a speed of 174kmp/h.

His excuse was that he had just dropped his father at OR Tambo International and was rushing back home.

“The second driver arrested was behind the wheel of a white Mercedes Benz ML400 SUV and was caught doing 162kmp/h on this 120kmp/h stretch of the freeway,” said Kagasago.

“The 58-year-old, who said he is a doctor, told officers he was late for a game of golf.”

Both drivers were detained at Boksburg North Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

They were later released on R1500 bail each and are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Later on around 9am the same Sunday morning, the EMPD High Speed Unit moved to R21 southbound between the N12 bridge and Northrand Road which is an 80km/h zone.

At this location, three drivers were also arrested for excessive speeding.

At 9am a 34-year-old male driver in a white Ford ST hatchback was clocked at 117km/h saying that he was rushing to Gold Reef City.

The second speedster nabbed at 10.30am was a 54-year-old medical doctor in a grey Jaguar sedan with a female passenger. Caught doing 130km/h, he advanced the reason that he was rushing to the East Rand Mall.

The third driver, aged 42, apprehended in a white Audi S5 with two kids as passengers, was caught doing 151km/h saying he was on his way to Wild Waters for an outing.

All three drivers were briefly detained at Boksburg North Police Station for reckless and negligent driving. They were allowed to go home after posting bail of R1500 each.

They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
