Watch: Old Magistrate’s Court to be turned into metro offices

The Ekurhuleni metro has confirmed that the Old Magistrate's Court will be utilised as metro offices.

The building is situated on Church Street and dates back to 1889, making it a historic site.

The Advertiser visited the area on December 12 while construction workers were on site.

The workers claimed they were hired by the municipality to fix the building.

According to Themba Gadebe, the metro spokesperson, the purpose of this project is to upgrade the Old Magistrate’s Court to provide office space for the Ekurhuleni metro.

He said the property has been left unattended for so many years because of a lack of funding.

“Funding had to be secured first for the renovation of the building, hence the upgrades are taking place now,” Gadebe said.

According to the SA Venues website, the building was designed by Sytze Wierda in 1889, who was the chief architect of the South African Public Works Department.

The building was finished in 1891 and was used as a court by magistrates and staff until it was commissioned by the Boksburg Municipality in 1958.
