Soul Shack shooting: Police still investigating murder of Errol Mommsen

Police are continuing their investigations into the murder of 55-year-old Errol Mommsen who was shot dead at the Soul Shack pub and restaurant in Trichardts Road, Eveleigh on October 27.

According to Capt Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, Mommsen was killed at about 7pm that day, allegedly by an off-duty police officer.

She confirmed that a case of murder was registered following the shooting and that two other people were reportedly also injured during the incident. Two firearms were confiscated at the scene.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was on the scene and are heading the investigation.

The Advertiser has requested comment from IPID on the status of the investigation but no response has been received to date.

Mommsen’s brother, Kevin, said the incident has taken a toll on all family members.

He described his brother as a person who was well liked and generous, especially when it came to financial help.

“Errol was a really good person and had a very big heart.”

According to Kevin, Errol would also come to anyone’s aid when they were being bullied – whether he knew them or not.

“My father taught all his sons never to be a bully because if he found out he would bully us! That is how Errol was brought up and that, together with the fact that Errol was badly bullied when he was 15 years old, started his passion for bodybuilding at a young age.

“He was not the bad person people made him out to be at all and definitely not a ‘well known violent’ criminal as some people suggested!

“Unfortunately my brother is not here to tell us what happened that night at Soul Shack,” said Kevin.
