Old Boys suffer humiliating defeat against Benoni Northerns

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI fell to a humiliating 155-run loss to a rampant Benoni Northerns side in Benoni on November 12.

The home side raced to 246/9 in their allotted 50 overs during the afternoon’s opening innings with top batsman Vaughn Humphrey scoring the afternoon’s highest score of 51.

In the second innings with Old Boys behind the crease, the visitors were limited to 91 after 31 overs as Northerns secured a deserved bonus-point win.

Brilliant bowling from the home side saw Stefano Di Bartolomeo take 3/16 in five overs, including a maiden while Lance Humphrey and Harley Steyn took 2/11; 1 and 2/14;1 in 6.2 and 6 overs respectively.

Ernest Kemm also took a deuce with a single maiden and conceded just 10 runs in five overs.

The subsequent knock-on effect meant relied-upon batters like Mark Pearse, captain Casey Arnold and Dylan Bennie could do little to spare the visitors’ blushes with Bennie’s nine runs the only production from the three on the day.

Arnold, Dan van der Berg and Craig Parker took a brace of wickets but not before the Northerns strikers ran them ragged.

Parker finished as the visitors’ top scorer with 31 runs. He and his teammates will have to regroup swiftly as another tough assignment awaits them at home this Sunday: a visit from defending champion Kempton Park.

The season’s first half will culminate on December 3.
