Sunward Park learners benefit from the secret code …

Sunward Park High recently became the first school in Ekurhuleni to benefit from a unique after-school programme run by Code4Change (C4C).

It aims at encouraging coding training and development.

Representatives of Code For Change recently visited the school. Maipato Nkebenyane, of C4C, explained they have launched #CodeJIKA which is about having fun, making friends, making websites and learning great things.

“Through this platform, we are able to facilitate the training of coding skills for high school students in grades eight to 11. At the end of our programme, students are able to create interactive websites, apps and games.

“Our main mandate is to bring coding to every secondary school in South Africa,” Nkebenyane explained.

Learners who participated in the recent Code4Change launch at Sunward Park High are (from left): Keletso Mogabe, Babalwa Nkosi, Lebohang Brown, Mbali Mkhatshane and Bulelwa Mhlongacala.

“The vision is that of an innovative ecosystem of youth-run coding clubs through the length and breadth of the country.”

He said that through this intervention they look forward to the increased uptake of CAT and IT as subject electives at Sunward Park High, an increase in the matric pass rate and exposure of the school’s coding superstars from inter-school and national competitions at the annual C4C high-level coding competitions.

As Code4Change is a non-profit organisation and the programmes are delivered at no cost to the schools.

“We are working to bring coding to 100 secondary schools across South Africa next year and require partners to put this plan in motion and we believe coding is fast becoming the skill to possess to future-proof our workforce,” Nkebenyane said.

Local high schools who want to be involved or find out more about Code4Change, may contact them on 011 455 2282 or visit www.code4change.co.za
