Motorist (21) cites sick in-laws as reason for gross speed transgression

Seven motorists found themselves behind bars at Boksburg North Police Station for high speed during a special operation by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) High Speed Unit on Saturday, October 28, on the R21 freeway between North Rand Road and the N12 bridge.

The operation was conducted between 11am and 5pm. The highest speedster arrested clocked 158km/h and the lowest was registered at 118km/h.

According to EMPD chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, at 12.35pm a 21-year-old man driving a blue VW Polo was caught doing 158km/h on this 80km/h stretch of the freeway.

He claimed he was rushing to his sick in-laws.

The second highest speedster, a 43-year-old man on a black BMW motorbike, was caught doing 146km/h and said he was on his way to a shopping mall.

The rest of the speedsters, who were all males, were caught between 11.50am and 12.45pm doing speeds of between 132km/h and 118km/h.

Reasons advanced by the offenders ranged from being late for work to rushing home to a seriously ill relative.

The arrested drivers were detained at Boksburg North Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving and later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
