Sunward Park house robbery: Four suspects nabbed

Four suspects, who had allegedly earlier robbed a house in Sunward Park, were, at about 3pm on October 26, arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and the SAPS.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the suspects fled the scene in a silver Kia sedan with television sets, tablets and cellphones.

A neighbour alerted a private security company who was then joined by the EMPD First Responder Unit and SAPS members in a pursuit of the suspects.

Gunfire was exchanged during the pursuit and the suspects were arrested after crashing into a VW Polo in an open veld along Koort Road in Brakpan.

“The suspects abandoned their getaway vehicle after the crash and fled on foot into the Withok area. A search of the area was conducted during which the EMPD arrested two suspects and the police the other two, who were found hiding in a house,” Kgasago said. “One of the suspects was bleeding from a gunshot wound and taken to hospital under police guard.”

A 9mm pistol, two plasma TVs, tablets, cellphones, housebreak-in implements and a black jacket were recovered inside the Kia, which was confirmed to have been hijacked earlier in October in Clermont in Durban.

Three of the suspects were detained at Brakpan Police Station and charged with possession of an unlicenced firearm, possession of stolen goods, possession of a hijacked vehicle and reckless and negligent driving.

They were due to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on October 27.
